Guidelines and Conditions of Submission for Authors

I. CONDITIONS OF SUBMISSION

Submission of a work to SEXTANT constitutes a representation and warranty that the work is original, upholds academic integrity, and contains no plagiarism. Upon acceptance for publication, the author agrees to abide by SEXTANT’s copyright and licensing conditions.

The submitting author further represents and warrants that:

Authors are responsible for securing any necessary permissions to quote from or reproduce copyrighted material prior to submission. When reproducing photographs or figures, the source and copyright information must be clearly acknowledged in the caption.

By submitting to SEXTANT, authors agree to make their work available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). This license allows others to share and adapt the work, provided the original author is credited.

II. PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Please email your submission to sextant@ucd.ie, including the following information:

  1. Title: Provide a concise title that captures the content of your project. For instance: “The English
    Boy Among the Derry Girls: Marginalised Masculinities in Derry Girls”. (Up to 20 words).
  2. Abstract: Include an abstract of 100–150 words summarising the key points of your work.
  3. Keywords: Supply up to five keywords that best describe your submission.
  4. Author Information: In your submission email only, include your full name and email address.
  5. Anonymised Manuscript: Attach your manuscript in anonymised form, with no author names or identifying information.
  6. Accessibility: Please try to ensure that your submission follows the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). See HERE for guidance.

III. MANUSCRIPT GUIDELINES FOR ARTICLES AND WRITTEN MATERIALS

  1. Use 12-point Verdana or Times New Roman, double-spaced, with 2.5 cm margins. Submit your manuscript as a .doc or .docx file; PDF submissions will not be accepted.
  2. Format all citations and references according to the Harvard style. See guidelines HERE.
  3. Embed figures and tables in the manuscript and also supply them as separate high-resolution files.
  4. Manuscripts should be 8,000 words maximum (inclusive of references, tables, and captions, but excluding the title and abstract).
  5. Ensure that your manuscript contains no identifying information, as all submissions will undergo double-blind peer review.

IV. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR ART, MULTIMEDIA, AND OTHER FORMATS

SEXTANT welcomes submissions in creative formats. Art and multimedia submissions will be reviewed editorially without formal peer review. When submitting creative pieces, please ensure these guidelines are followed:

  1. Include all relevant details, such as your name, email, abstract, and keywords in your submission email.
  2. Attach art pieces, designs, photographs, videos, audio recordings, or other multimedia submissions as separate high-resolution files.

IV. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR E-PORTFOLIOS AND WORK HOSTED ON EXTERNAL PLATFORMS:

SEXTANT welcomes e-portfolios and other works hosted on external platforms. These submissions will be reviewed by the editorial team rather than through formal peer review. When submitting an e-portfolio, please ensure these guidelines are followed:

  1. Include all relevant details, such as your name, email, abstract, and keywords in your submission email.
  2. Include a link to your e-portfolio or virtual platform submission.
  3. Ensure that all materials comply with copyright and licensing requirements, and that any third-party content is used with permission.
  4. To facilitate review and publication, the editorial team may request access to the platform, specific formatting changes, or a static backup version (e.g., PDF, screenshots, or exported files) to ensure long-term accessibility.
  5. If accepted, the editorial team will provide further instructions for preparing your work for publication.
