ABSTRACT

This collection of photographs, taken in 2022 in Chinatown, New York, explores identity and belonging from the perspective of a Chinese-Irish person. Together, these images represent the resilience of the people of Hong Kong and celebrate the homemaking practices of the Hong Kong diaspora. The photographer’s experience in New York’s Chinatown allowed for a sense of belonging and safety, as opposed to his experiences in Ireland, where an Asian person is perceived as “Other” and their Irish identity is often challenged. These photographs are intended to represent a freedom from such challenges to identity, and a joyful homecoming in a land far from home.
