ABSTRACT

This article discusses the consequence of globalisation and the impact of Muslim immigrants on the local narratives of hegemonic masculinities in their shelter countries. Drawing on the current literature, this article aims to determine whether the local notion of masculinities in host countries is impacted by Muslim immigrants or vice versa, highlighting the interplay between global and local forces. Mobility and simplified communication through globalisation show an impact on local narratives of hegemonic masculinities, where culturally implemented power structures are being challenged, especially in Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries. Yet, local and global narratives remain autonomous, operating according to their own distinct dynamics. Muslim immigrants show high interest to assimilate into local masculinity narratives. The discrepancy between the local narratives of the host and the home country leads to migrants’ interconnecting the concepts. Contrary immigrant narratives of masculinities do not show any effects on local notions of masculinities.
